As part of this ongoing project, the museum will make available two of the most widely used software programs of the 1980’s, MS DOS 1.1 and 2.0 and Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1a, to help future generations of technologists better understand the roots of personal computing.

Nice find .
According to the comments in these sources, at least one programmer had fun:
These sources answered the question: "Why [] are considered as special characters ?" (http://www.dostips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=33992#p33992)
In short - since MS-DOS 2.0 internaly some ANSI escape sequences are used for some kind of signaling: For example ESC"[K" for erase line.

; nope... cry and sob
; save him for a rainy day
; did we read the right number?
; yep... continue
; exactly the wrong number... no memory
; no starto, chumo!
; zibo arises!
; WOMP!
; Wham!

Would have been nice if they released all of the latest versions of DOS and maybe even Windows 3.11.

Fascinating. It's 30+ years since MS-DOS 2.0. Makes one wonder how much _other_ dead code must be lugging along.penpen wrote:These sources answered the question: "Why [] are considered as special characters ?" (http://www.dostips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=33992#p33992)

Maybe, someday, even NT 3.1. Would make the perfect companion to the great book that was the first edition of Inside Windows NT.Squashman wrote:Would have been nice if they released all of the latest versions of DOS and maybe even Windows 3.11.

Re: Microsoft makes source code for MS-DOS and Word for Wind
Yes, they released version 2, too.
It is in the same ".zip" file in subfolder "v20source" (assembler sources, too).

Edit: Somehow i've overseen the "why" in the post above; sorry for that.
