FTP - Manage any errors

Hello!
My wish is that at a certain time, will automatically be able to send / download files from an FTP server.
If it is possible to create a log file of what happened during FTP-transfers. If it's possible, receive an email /or create an other log file if errors occurred.
Is there any script to start with?
I have found how to write a script to download files / upload files using FTP (Have not tried any scripts yet)
Do I need to use PowerShell or is the CMD-promt still enough?
Do you have to run the FTP-script as administrator?
