sector not found writing drive C error

#1 Post by Wishmaster84 » 05 Sep 2016 03:23

Hello,

I'm having a problem with a procedure used to update a device. This procedure uses a USB DOS bootable key containing all files for update the software. When the USB is inserted in the device an autoexec.bat starts asking the operator to update software, then a copy of all files from the USB key to the device hard drive starts. During the copy an error "Sector not found writing drive C:" occurs where C: is the USB disk. Even if i select Retry, the problem persists. Repeating the procedure three or four times, the updating procedure is succesful. Not all USB keys have this problem, but I have to find a solution indipendtly of the type of USB key.

Thank you.

Is it the same computer that is used with these different USB keys?

1) It may be that the USB keys use different internal hardware that the software that makes them bootable doesn't handle very well.

2) The USB keys could be faulty.

3) The BIOS might like that certain type of USB key.

These are possibilities but I have no details of the USB keys so it's up to you to check.

Hi, Thank you for your answer.
Some details: The USB keys are all Verbatim 2.0 8 Gb http://www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en/prod/pinstripe-usb-drive-8gb-black-49062/
I use the same procedure to produce the USB bootable keys, but some USB keys have the problem. Using a scandisk on the key which fails the installation, it doesn't detect problems.
In the bios I don't see options related to USB types.
Could it be related to options in CONFIG.SYS?
Do you have other suggestions?
Thank you.

You don't use scandisk for flash media, try something like H2testw or Check Flash.

When using the same computer
the same USB keys
the same procedure to produce the USB bootable keys

...something is fishy.

Computers are electronic gear which are largely reproducible in their behaviour.
That's how programs work and why batch scripts work reliably.

If you test the same usb keys on two of your friends computers and the same USB keys fail then the USB keys themselves are faulty.

Hello,

The same USB has problems on different devices. I tried to make a check with the program Check Flash and H2test but no problems on sectors are detected. Which kind of tests can I perform?
Thank you

It sounds like it's defective.

If it is a number of the same type of USB key that doesn't work then it's probably a hardware limitation in the USB electronics - the solution is to get another model of USB key.
